{"id":72,"date":"2015-07-21T11:17:09","date_gmt":"2015-07-21T15:17:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dennislandis.com\/wptempdirectory\/?p=72"},"modified":"2015-07-21T11:21:47","modified_gmt":"2015-07-21T15:21:47","slug":"the-first-time-i-saw-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.dennislandis.com\/wptempdirectory\/?p=72","title":{"rendered":"The first time I saw Story"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During the summer before medical school, I was working with the Zeiss EM 9A electron microscope at the Biological Labs in Cambridge.\u00a0 I had finished an honors project doing electron microscopy, and was allowed to continue working on the device.\u00a0 The bargain, however, stipulated that I keep the instrument aligned and functioning optimally.\u00a0 That was well nigh impossible.\u00a0 It had a poorly designed double cup condenser system that was always drifting out of mechanical alignment.\u00a0 Each day I toiled for 1-2 hours just to get the image on the screen.<\/p>\n<p>While I was working in the darkened EM room, Dick McIntosh, my research project advisor, came into the room with a little blonde slip of a girl.\u00a0 He explained that she was coming to work as a technician, and that one of her chores would be to take over care of the Zeiss.\u00a0 She was lovely, and I stammered out something about being willing to help her to learn about the device.<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dennislandis.com\/wptempdirectory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/StorySundress.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-75\" src=\"http:\/\/www.dennislandis.com\/wptempdirectory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/StorySundress-726x1024.jpg\" alt=\"StorySundress\" width=\"529\" height=\"746\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.dennislandis.com\/wptempdirectory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/StorySundress-726x1024.jpg 726w, http:\/\/www.dennislandis.com\/wptempdirectory\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/StorySundress-213x300.jpg 213w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 529px) 100vw, 529px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>They left, and continued their tour.\u00a0 I sat in the warm glow of the experience, but later chuckled to myself.
